About the dictionary

Winfried Honig – known as “Mr. Honey” – began collecting word lists for business English as a lecturer in the 1970s and maintained them on the computer for decades. From 1997 he made them available to the online dictionary LEO, and from 2000 to DICDATA as well; through Project Gutenberg his dictionaries remain freely accessible to this day. Winfried Honig died in October 2018. More on the history of the dictionary →

This page makes both versions of his Large Business Dictionary – English-German and German-English – available through a fast search form. It is a showcase for AI-assisted software development – a demonstration piece, not a product, with no warranty and no support.

Source and rights notice

Word lists from Mr Honey’s Large Business Dictionary in the English-German and German-English versions, © 2001, 2002 Winfried Honig, published via Project Gutenberg. The author permitted use of the word lists on condition that the links to LEO, DICDATA and Mr Honey are maintained. The entries have been taken over unchanged in content and have been neither modernised nor editorially corrected (e.g. old German spelling). Only some 30 entries whose columns had slipped when one of the versions was read in were put right using the other version; duplicate entries have been merged.

Background

Mr. Honey’s Business Dictionary

What is Mr. Honey’s Business Dictionary?

Mr. Honey’s Business Dictionary is a series of bilingual business dictionaries (English-German and German-English) compiled over decades by Winfried Honig – also known as “Mr. Honey”. The dictionaries cover a wide range of commercial terms and phrases, from finance and marketing to management, law and logistics. The author himself called his work a “work in progress dictionary of phrases commonly used”.

The series at Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg offers 20 editions as free downloads: ten titles, each in a version for English readers (English-German) and one for German readers (German-English). According to the preface, both versions contain the same entries, merely sorted differently. The numbers are the eBook numbers of the German-English/English-German versions.

This page searches the most comprehensive work in the series, the Large Business Dictionary, in both versions.

History and origins

Use and rights

The dictionaries are not in the public domain: they are protected by Winfried Honig’s copyright (© 2001, 2002) and are listed by Project Gutenberg as “Copyrighted”. Copying and passing them on is expressly encouraged. The author permitted use of his word lists on condition that the links to LEO, DICDATA and Mr Honey are maintained. He regarded his services as non-commercial – they were meant to promote the language of business in English and in German alike.

This text is based on an AI-generated summary (Google Genesis). It was checked, corrected and supplemented using the preface and catalogue information at Project Gutenberg. In particular, the scope of the series (not three but ten titles in two versions each) and the licence information (no “free licence”, but copyright with the author’s permission to use) were corrected.
